Whether you’re a teen just starting out or an adult seeking independence on the road, The School of Driving makes the journey to your license smooth, supported, and confidence-filled.

📘 TEENAGERS (Under 18)

• Enroll in our state-approved online Teen Driver Education course.

• After completing the first 6 hours, you will receive a Driver Education Certificate (DE-964) marked “Learner’s License Only.”

Step 3: Complete Behind-the-Wheel Driving Practice

• Texas requires 44 total hours of behind-the-wheel practice, which can be completed in one of two ways:

Option A: Parent-Led Only

• All 44 hours may be completed with a parent or guardian.

Option B: School-Led + Parent-Led (Most Common)

• Minimum 7 hours of in-car driving with a licensed driving school

• 7 hours of in-car observation with a licensed driving school

• Remaining 30 hours completed with a parent or guardian

• Practice hours must be logged using the official driving log:

Step 4: Complete the Impact Texas Teen Drivers (ITTD) Course

• Take the free ITTD course online.

• This course is mandatory before any road test and must be completed within 90 days of testing.

Step 5: Take the Road Test & Get Licensed

• The road test may be taken with a certified third-party provider or directly at the DPS.

• A parent or legal guardian must be present for the road test regardless of where it is taken.

• Bring all required paperwork (certificates, logs, permit).

Same steps as ages 18–24, with one key difference:

Step 1: Adult Driver Education Course (Optional but Strongly Recommended)

• The 6-Hour Adult Driver Education course (ADE-1317) is optional for drivers age 25+.

• If you do not take the course, you must take the DPS written knowledge test in person at your DPS appointment.

⚠️ If you fail the DPS knowledge test:

 • You will be sent home

 • You must rebook a new DPS appointment

 • Licensing may be delayed weeks or longer

✅ Taking the ADE-1317 course at home:

 • Eliminates the DPS written test

 • Reduces risk of failure

 • Saves time and repeat appointments
